Roadworthy Baby Vehicles Sunday 2nd March 2008 by Dulwich Mum
Bea Parry-Jones is a late thirty something mother of two. She’s author of hugely successful blog Dulwichmum , in which she documents her efforts to avoid absolute lunacy and remain on the right side of conscientious parenting. She and her husband spend a small fortune on private education, Baby Boden, Babybels and the au pairs gym membership.
Bea’s first novel “Sex Lies and Sellotape – confessions of a Dulwich mum” will be published in 2008.
The new “08”car registration plates have just been issued so my husband is off to collect his new vehicle – he is a man obsessed. In the past, I too have been pre-occupied by the quest to acquire “the right” set of wheels; I love nothing more than scrutinising the latest baby carriages in the park...
With the birth of my first tot, the obvious choice of pram for me was a super status Silver Cross Balmoral in navy and white.
My needs were simple. I required a sumptuous set of status wheels for first born that was enormous enough to discourage the nanny from packing it onto the bus for a trip in to town. The Silver Cross ensured that my progeny was happily occupied in the park while I was at work!
Romantic and lavish, this traditional pram served my needs perfectly and even my mother in law approved. Not only did the nanny find it impossible to do public transport but the pram was also impossible to accommodate in the car. I’m sure that she eventually enjoyed the kudos of strolling the enormous perambulator around the local park and village.
What a shame that Charlotte Church was recently paped pushing a white Silver Cross pram with a pink hood – talk about negative product placement! OHMYGOD.
Obviously everyone has their own individual set of requirements when selecting transport for their newborn. Compact styles and “travel systems” that combine push chair/cot/car seat are extremely popular with busy mothers.
The Bugaboo Cameleon is eye-catching, customisable, versatile, and practical. I recently saw a beautiful black Bugaboo Bee on 5th Avenue in New York with a tiny pooch perched in the parcel shelf beneath the infant. No two mothers will have identical needs! The versatile light weight frame can accommodate a conventional Maxi-Cosi car seat for quick pram to car transfer, perfect for a mother about town.
The Luxurious Mamas & Papas Ultima 8-in-1 Combination MPX ticks every box and is reassuringly solid, traditional and luxurious.
A stylish pram is the perfect accessory for the fashion conscious mother. Over the past few years quirky shapes have become popular.
The chic new Phil & Teds Vibe Inline Buggy is the most ingenious and light weight three wheeled double buggy around. It effortlessly accommodates a new baby plus toddler or twins, is slim enough to easily manoeuvre through narrow door ways and negotiate up and down kerbs and steps.
Others might be inspired by the quirky shape of the Stokke Xplory Stroller . If you’re not all that sure, it’s incredibly easy to compare styles, features and options when shopping for major purchases such as a pram online.
Sites like TheBaby.co.uk have enabled parents to easily compare and access a vast array of products without the need to trawl the high street. Because a girl would much rather be channelling her energy into selecting colours for the nursery (sigh).
