The Big Split Tuesday 14th August 2007 by Cherry Menlove
It goes without saying that most women love nothing more than fresh flowers throughout their home. But how often do we actually go out and purchase enough flowers to place in or on all the surfaces, nooks and items of furniture that we’d like our flowery friends to adorn?
Not as often as we’d like to I’m sure. Perhaps this explains why when a welcome guest arrives with a bunch in their arms we invariably end up reaching into the cupboard beneath the sink or a far off shelf to find the vase that “we’re sure was around here somewhere!”
So how can we achieve the look and feel of fresh flowers in every room without having the floral budget of Elton John (he spends a fortune on them)?
The answer: Buy one bunch and split them up into several smaller sized bunches.
To do this successfully you do need various vases, bud vases, tea pots and even jugs to put the flowers in to. But as you can see from the pictures that come from my own home I have used all manner of receptacles.
Go for the biggest bunch of flowers that you can find within your budget for the week but also take into consideration the size of the flower and the colour. For fabulous flowers I adore Moyses who also do their own range of cut flowers arranged in sweet mugs (pictured ).
Freesias mightn’t work as well - no matter how glorious the scents are, the flowers are slighter and you don’t get as many to a single bunch as you might get with something in the Chrysanthemum or Daisy family.
Also take into consideration the colours throughout your house. My house has been decorated in a series of muted creams with Pale Powder by Farrow and Ball used on the front door, Eau de Nil by Laura Ashley used on certain items of furniture that needed sprucing up and a soft creamy green used in the bedroom.
So the variety of small white chrysanthemums that I’ve been using this past weekend work well throughout the entire house and in each and every room.
Your friends mightn’t comment immediately on how fresh your home looks or how they love the idea of having sunny Chrysanth’s popping out of your Granny’s old teapot (though they may even wish they’d thought of it) but you can bet you’ll see the same idea being used the next time you visit. And if you do, remember to compliment her on how beautiful the flowers are!
