The Love of the List – Lists to Make Now Tuesday 18th September 2007 by Cherry Menlove
In the course of a week there are rotating lists I make time and time again, week after week and there are lists I make sporadically as and when I need them (like the current one that lists the jobs I have to have done before a photographer visits my house next week).
I tend to have at least four on the go (in one little note book – see For The Love Of The List An Introduction
) but you may find that after a few months of using certain types of lists you no longer need to physically write them down. That said, it’s good to get into a habit at the start especially if you’re making a conscious effort to get your life in better order.
Gift List – A domestic goddess never forgets a birthday, anniversary or special occasion. Check at the start of each month and make a note of them. Add the websites that you’d like to visit in order to purchase gifts for the people on this list. Ensure you're really well prepared and visit Squashed Tomato where you can buy themed packs of greeting cards that get delivered every three months.
Grocery Shopping List – whether you live alone or have to cater for a family of seven I’d keep this one on you at all times, especially if you only have the time to shop for groceries once a week. Keeping a note of what you need will not only ensure that you are able to prepare your menus without frustration but it will also keep your grocery budget under control. And if you’re an Ocado shopper then a list will make the task much more thorough.
Admin List – bills to pay, calls to make, changes to accounts to make as well as accounts to open... This list is the one that stops me waking in the middle of the night in a panic that the water’s about to be cut off. It’s the most boring of lists but the one which will keep your house running smoothly. Avoid this list and its contents at your peril.
Your List – Keep this list private. Write down what it is that you want to achieve that day, week, month, year and watch your progress. Add simple things (like a reminder to make a hair appointment or to check out the super duper New England Lifestyle website); fun things; vacuous things and all things frivolous. This is your list and it can contain whatever you want it to contain! Nobody’s going to see it after all...
Until next time.
