Spring/Summer 08 Trend ReportAt SheerLuxe we follow fashion but we’re not a slave to it; we enjoy fashion but we don’t live for it. Because in our eyes good fashion sense is as much about style as it is about die hard followings.
This spring / summer anything goes... Rules? There are no rules: long or short; printed or plain; bright or neutral...
Youthful florals, gossamer-light sheer dresses and romantic ruffles form a strong contrast with bright bold colours, splashes of paint and laidback but luxe sportswear.
As always elements of safari, tribe and riviera chic have a part to play.
Here’s our round up for all you need to know about dressing on trend but in style this season.
Sheer Femininity: The spring / summer season allows you every flirty and fanciful feminine indulgence you could possibly wish for. Discover sheer tulles, soft layers, tiered ruffles and dreamy organzas in a palette of sweet shades that includes the palest lilac and the softest blush. It’s the season for true romance.
An array of delicious deluxe details are to be found in this look: feathers, fringing, lace (lingerie is coming out from under and in to fashion this season) and even more pleats and ruffles.
Sport Luxe: A more urban alternative to this craze for femininity. Soft and relaxed fabrics that are cool and comfortable (without compromising on style) yet quietly confident. This isn’t sportswear for the sporty spices; this is the ideal weekend wear.
In The Navy: No new season would be complete without a nod towards the nautical look. This time around designers are thinking navy – both in terms of colour and military. Stripes are aplenty (a key detail for riviera chic) and stars are the detail du jour.
Floral Prints: Florals range from the tiniest sprigs to super-sized blooms. Floaty watercolours contrast with brush strokes on prints - fashion and art have always been intertwined and now you can wear your own big and bold masterpiece.
And if you’re more futuristic than impressionistic discover a new wave of geometric, abstract and computer generated prints .
Ethnic Tribe: Another strong look in its own right for S/S. Tribal prints, paisley, wooden bangles piled high, maxi dresses, kaftans and the tie dye / dip dye are all on offer if you’re more boho than belle.
Team tribal with tea party for a look that’s surprisingly on trend.
Sold Brights : The catwalks were awash with strong, bright, bold shades. Canary yellow is the colour of the season closely followed by kingfisher blue. Fuschia pink, zesty orange and chartreuse red make up the range.
For a bright that’s not quite so overpowering opt for coral or combine pops of bright colour with dove grey.
Denim: Skinny still remains but the wide leg reigns. Raid your 80s archive for denim that is washed out and pale and your 70s dressing up box for belle bottoms and flares. Cropped is cool – especially with zips.
Tailoring: Jackets have strong shoulders; trouser suits are soft but structured in a palette of neutral colours; skirts are short and full. Team the 50s inspired prom skirt with a cropped jacket or tucked in top for a high and defined waist.
Key Pieces:
Sheer lightweight trousers and / or cropped pants.
Shorts, the shorter the better - especially for cocktail.
Full skirts.
One piece swimsuits.
All in ones / the jumpsuit - it's your NBF (teamed with wedges, not flats).
Oversized day clutch – anything goes as long as it makes a statement.
Wedges and / or platforms.
The Accessories:
Big floppy hats / visors / the clutch / snakeskin totes / piled high bangles / aviators / oversized shades / 30’s round glamour frames / headscarves.
Footwear: Chunky strappy footwear / brightly coloured riding boots / wedges / platform patent shoes / gladiator sandals and boots (a la Balenciaga) / reed thin heels.
Sound daunting. Only if you try and do it all.
