A French Make-Up Artist Talks Us Through Her Kit

Where better to find fresh beauty inspiration than a make-up artist’s kit? Known for her glossy skin and playful use of colour, Parisian make-up artist Lorélen Coriton has a keen eye and knows what is and isn’t worth your money. From the brushes she loves to the brow and lip products she swears by, here’s what she relies on time and again.

BEAUTY TOOLS

“My favourite brushes are all by Dior. They’re the best shapes and fit into all the contours of your face for smooth application. I find they last for years too. Zoeva also does incredible brushes for the price, as does Makeup For Ever – I keep all three of these brands in my kit. When I am not using brushes, I’ll use my Makeup For Ever sponges. They’re great at erasing any brush marks on the skin. I love using them to blend out cream textures, too.”

EYE MAKE-UP

“Everyone needs a good set of lash curlers. I rate both Dior’s and, of course, the ‘OG’ ones by Shu Uemura. I always keep the Nikki No Makeup Lashes from Sweed in my kit too. Great for adding volume, you can also trim them and adapt them for whatever look you want to create. I often use a few at the outer corners for that doe-eyed effect. For statement eyes, I prefer to use creamy, glossy formulas as they catch the light better. I love Glossier’s Lidstars as they are so easy to apply and offer instant impact. For powder and cream shadows, I have several from Cozzette in warm and universally flattering, cool-toned browns. If you’ve never tried the brand before, you’ll find the pigments and staying power are so impressive. The only eyeliner I use on my clients is the Tattoo Ink from KVD Beauty – it’s the best.”

MASCARA & BROWS

Charlotte Tilbury’s liners are always in my kit. They don’t move around the eyelid, but they do blend well for that smudged-out, smokey effect – I have endless shades. For mascara, I always return to Benefit’s BadGal Bang! and specifically the waterproof formula. I am telling you, nothing rivals it. I am a big believer in lash primers and often use them on my clients to enhance definition. My favourite is the one by NARS – non-sticky and workable, it layers well for extra volume. For brows, I swear by the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze and Benefit’s 24H Brow Setter Gel – I use both on repeat. To fill in sparse brows and create more shape, I love Valentino’s Brow Trio.”

LIPSTICKS & LINERS

“I tend to prefer creamy or glossy lip textures, but always a matte for red shades. For nude tones, I always come back to ‘100 Nude’ from Dior – the liner is great for creating subtle definition. The colours from KKW Beauty were amazing too before the brand closed – I have stashed so many away in my kit so I’m never without. For more of a tinted effect, I rely on the Hourglass Lip Balms – they suit everyone and are the perfect gloss and cream hybrid; I love the healthy finish. For a classic red, it’s always ‘Ruby Woo’ from M·A·C, or Jimmy Choo’s lipstick in ‘Red Attraction’.

FOUNDATION, HIGHLIGHTER & BLUSH

“Unlike some make-up artists, I never use a primer – just a good moisturiser. My favourite is the Flawless Filter from Charlotte Tilbury and Valentino’s Weightless Long-Lasting formula. The coverage is amazing and the glow is so soft. I only use cream blush – another product I am never without. On my clients, and myself, I use the Anastasia Beverly Hills Blush in ‘Peachy Keen’ and all the Fenty Beauty Cream Cheek Palettes. They are so versatile and come in so many flattering shades.”

OTHER ESSENTIALS

“Like most make-up artists, there’s always an alcoholic disinfectant in my kit so that all my products and tools stay clean for clients. I rate Parian Spirit Brush Cleaner and Cinema Secrets – if you want to give your tools a clean, both of them work wonders. I love a good Vueset Mango Palette, too. They’re great for storing different shades of lipsticks and cream-based products.”
