Shay Mitchell: My Life In Beauty

Shay Mitchell: My Life In Beauty

Actress and influencer Shay Mitchell is no stranger to beauty. In fact, it’s her eye-catching looks, playful manner and no BS approach which has helped build her 25m-strong Instagram following– so it’s only fitting she’s the new face of the iconic Cacharel fragrances. Here, she opens up about her skincare essentials, why a red lip never dates, and the treatments she’ll never forgo…

My go-to beauty essential is… coconut oil. I use it for absolutely everything – be it moisturising skin, chapped lips, hydrating cuticles or running through my hair if it’s feeling dry. I'm never without it.

The person I always visit for facials is… Shani Darden. My dear friend and aesthetician Shani is a skincare genius. Normally, outside of lockdown, I would visit her every three weeks. After a thorough cleanse, she uses vibration therapy to tone, tighten and lift, before finishing with one of her own peels – it leaves my skin a little red but it quickly calms down. The results are amazing.

For healthy skin, nothing beats… hydration. It’s obvious, I know, but I travel a lot and a constant tip I’m given is to try and maintain hydration. Moisturise every day – especially through dry winters – and use topical creams that suit you. It really is the key to healthy, plump-looking skin.

The fragrance I am gravitating to right now is… Cacharel Yes I Am Fabulous. I love every fragrance in the collection, they’re all such unique scents to compliment different parts of a woman’s personality. But I do find myself spritzing Yes I Am Fabulous the most – it’s a little fruitier than the others but very empowering. The original is beautiful, too.

‘Yes I Am Fabulous’ is coming to the UK soon.

My skincare advice for anybody is… less is more. I lean a lot on those around me to help with product recommendations and regimens, but my advice would be to keep things as minimal as possible. At most, you need to cleanse and moisturise daily, with gentle products that suit you – not what’s in fashion or trendy. Having said that, when it comes to make-up, sometimes more is more.

Five items I am never without are… my Shani Darden Retinol. It’s genuinely kind to my skin with no irritation. Other essentials include Patrick Ta’s Glow Highlighting Mist, Vaseline, a good mascara, and a phone charger. I carry everything around with me in my BÉIS make-up bag.

One beauty hack I swear by is… lash curlers. I always, always curl my lashes. Usually I have them done by Kelly Baker, but in between appointments, I keep them full and thick-looking by clamping down with curlers directly from the root.

I always carry… a red lipstick in my bag. A quick swipe is the easiest way to look pulled together fast. Having said that, it’s not always all about the reds – I absolutely love Buxom’s Full-On Plumping Lip Polish. It’s an expensive-looking nude that has a refreshing, tingly sensation, too.

The secret to my hair is… air-drying. I wish I could give you a product I use, but I like to leave it be when I am having a break from work. Like everything, maintaining healthy hair is all about balance. At most, I run a little coconut oil through my strands, but I do try and give it a rest from heat styling when I can.

When it comes to unwinding… just getting some sleep feels like a treat. Part of the ‘new mum effect’ means I don’t get enough, so when I do, it’s a real joy. For unwinding fully – does a bottle of wine count?
