The Brand…
Most of us are familiar with The Ordinary by now, but if you’re new to the brand, let’s recap. Since launching in 2016, the brand has revolutionised the way we shop for skincare, giving customers access to affordable, high-quality formulas that always deliver.

The New Launch…
This is the first time The Ordinary has launched a non-acid exfoliator, rethinking the way we look at exfoliation as a whole. Created with sensitive skin types in mind, it contains fermentation-driven ingredients that are gentle enough to be used twice a day. It also works over time to exfoliate dead skin cells and hydrate your complexion, feeding your skin with moisture and strengthening the skin barrier too.
Sweep it over your skin regularly to reduce the appearance of textural irregularities – that includes bumps, enlarged pores, and dullness. It also works hard to remove any build-up of dead skin, in turn improving radiance and glow. For best results, incorporate it into your routine as your first step post-cleanse, morning and night.
The Formula Explained…
Like all of The Ordinary’s products, this new launch focuses on a few key ingredients, including 30% saccharomyces ferment containing 3% of fermented N-acetylglucosamine.
Prudvi Kaka, The Ordinary’s Chief Scientific Officer explains…
“Most exfoliating ingredients work by targeting the bonds that act as the glue holding dead skin cells together. However, while AHAs break through these bonds, N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) keeps these bonds from sticking the dead skin cells to each other to begin with, allowing the dead skin to easily be exfoliated. Essentially, NAG gently exfoliates the skin by acting like a key on the other side of a keyhole. It occupies the space where the links that hold skin cells together (corneodesmosomes) would fit, and prevents cells from joining together. This helps to gently speed up the skin’s natural process of shedding dead skin cells. We have also included squalane, which is a hydrocarbon naturally found in the skin. It not only supports skin hydration, but also contributes toward this product’s comfortable, milky texture.”
The Review…
We’ve been trialling this now for a few weeks and with diligent use, we can confirm its efficacy. Not only does it deliver smoother-looking skin – it also softens and hydrates, thanks to added squalane which acts like a big drink for thirsty skin. The ingredients get to work fast without any stickiness or irritation. Lightweight and silky, we love that it doesn’t interfere with anything else you apply.

“While there are several gentle, hydrating toners on the market, we believe that the NAG-containing saccharomyces ferment is not as commonly used in the skincare industry. To create this unique ingredient, we've added NAG to a broth, which was then fermented by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The final raw material provides effective exfoliation without the inclusion of exfoliating acids or enzymes.
We’ve also maintained a very lightweight texture, even with added squalane, thanks to the use of a microfluidiser, which breaks the formula down into very small molecules, giving this toner its milky feel without the addition of a higher concentration of surfactants. All of these unique qualities are what make this latest launch so effective.”
