THE FILM:

Babylon

From Damien Chazelle – the man behind La La Land and Whiplash – Babylon is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. With Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva heading up an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart, this is just the thing to see on the big screen.

THE STAYCATION:

Boys Hall

Husband-and-wife team Brad and Kristie left their hospitality careers in London to create the getaway of their dreams, and have spent three years restoring Boys Hall in Kent to its former glory. The restaurant and bar are now open, with bedrooms to follow later this month. Whether you’re looking to escape for a weekend or longer, Boys Hall offers ten bedrooms, each individually designed with super king luxury beds, Egyptian cotton bedlinen, fluffy towels and the little touches to make you feel right at home. We like the idea of a relaxing soak in one of the roll-top baths – what a way to kick off the new year.

THE PLAY:

Sylvia

This month sees the launch of the highly anticipated musical Sylvia, directed and choreographed by Kate Prince and starring Beverley Knight as Emmeline Pankhurst. This revolutionary story celebrates the life of Sylvia – feminist, activist, pacifist, socialist, rebel – the lesser-known Pankhurst at the heart of the Suffragette movement, who changed the lives of working women and men across the world. Following its 2018 run as a work in progress, Prince’s Sylvia goes back to where it all began for its world premiere, uniting dance, hip hop, funk and soul to shine a light on a remarkable moment in history, with original music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde.

THE TRIBUTE:

Vivienne Westwood

Along with the rest of the world, we were saddened by the passing of fashion designer and lifelong activist Vivienne Westwood. Known as the ‘Queen of British Fashion’, the legendary designer died at the age of 81 on December 29th 2022. Westwood came to prominence with her controversial designs and anti-establishment attitude in the 1970s and continued to use fashion to express her revolutionary ideas throughout her career. She was a true disrupter of fashion, politics and environmental issues and it was her confrontational voice that changed the landscape of feminist fashion. She was credited with the revival of the British fashion scene and is responsible for some of the most iconic fashion moments in history. We will always remember the iconic sky-high heels that caused Naomi Campbell’s well-documented crash on the catwalk and her flashing the paps knickerless while picking up her OBE in 1992. The Vivienne Foundation, set up by her family this week, aims to continue her work and legacy by creating positive and progressive change in politics, war, climate change and human rights.
