2 Cool Sisters Share Their Style Rules

Shelcy and Christy are the sisters behind NYCxClothes and NYCxStudio – two platforms designed to challenge the lack of transparency and inclusivity in influencer marketing. With both girls known for their eclectic yet polished personal style, we asked them to share the fashion rules they live by…

Shelcy’s style is best described as experimental, polished and timeless. She’s quite adventurous when it comes to trying out new silhouettes, but always wears them in a way that feels true to her own style.

Christy’s is eclectic, youthful and also timeless. She always says she wants to look back decades from now and think, “I would still wear that today.”

Only buy into trends that really feel like you. They need to be wearable and work with your existing wardrobe. That said, experiment with different styles and eventually you’ll find your signature silhouettes. Also, get things tailored. Christy has a small waist, and really struggled to keep trousers in place until she started getting them tweaked. She hasn’t looked back since. You’ll be surprised with how confident you’ll feel when clothes fit your body properly.

Keep your finger on the pulse. Working in social media, we’re surrounded by newness and trends – but we’ll only ever incorporate them into our own wardrobes if they feel like an authentic extension of our personal style. For example, ‘Barbiecore’ was a major trend last year thanks to Valentino’s Pink PP Collection. Because there was plenty of colour in our wardrobes already, we had no problem rocking this bright shade – especially with our accessories.

Recognise how chic colour can be. There are many ways to let a colour shine without it looking too over the top. The key is to contrast two colours together. Some colours clash, but there are pairings that work really well, for example pink and red or grey and blue. Another way to wear colour is to go head-to-toe monochrome. Or, if your style is quite minimal, you can introduce colour through your accessories. The colours we’re loving at the moment are orange and mustard tones. We also love a good purple.

Stay loyal to the brands that work for you. We wear denim a lot and we’re loyal to Agolde. We also really like Re/Done as the washes are really nice. And, of course, vintage Levi’s. Lately, knitted dresses have been working hard in our wardrobes and we really love Dissh’s effortlessly chic, flattering and versatile styles. Other favourites include Christopher Esber, Manu Atelier, Tory Burch, Reformation, Khaite and Re Ona.

Find a uniform that reflects your lifestyle. On a day-to-day basis we stick to the kind of classic staples we can wear time and again – like an oversized blazer, well-cut denim and a pair of leather trousers. But we also love dressing up. Nicklas Skovgaard, a Copenhagen-based designer, is a recent discovery. All of his pieces are handmade from the most amazing fabrics and each design has the most incredible silhouette. For something a little sexier, Tae Park creates elegant, sexy pieces which are perfect for a night out. Speaking of nights out, so many brands are embracing glamour right now – one of our favourites is 16Arlington. There’s a reason its Solaria dress went viral last year. Finally, we love the Australian brand Aje – the definition of femininity.

Work with layers at this time of year. Boots are a must – not only are they practical, they can be worn with almost anything. This pair from COS have a chunky sole which makes them look a bit more fresh, plus they are affordable. A cashmere sweater is top of our list. You can wear roll-necks underneath, accessorise them with an array of necklaces or roll up the sleeves for a bit of nonchalance. You can’t go wrong with this one from Allude. We also love a scarf, and this mohair-blend Loewe one is the perfect finishing accessory. And finally, coats! You can never have too many coats as they have the power to completely transform an outfit. COS has some great structured styles at a reasonable price point – this black one has the perfect silhouette. Totême, another cult favourite, has a great selection if you’re looking for a coat with an elevated but functional design. Its scarf jacket is still so popular – and we love this olive colourway.

Try to be sustainable where possible. The most sustainable thing a brand can do is make good quality pieces that last. It's hard to constantly make conscious choices when you work in an industry that’s all about newness. Until we question the production schedule and how much this ‘newness’ is necessary, we’re unlikely to make a real change. We really recommend buying pieces that contribute towards your ‘capsule wardrobe’ – repeating outfits is normal. And, if you’re ever in a style rut, give vintage stores a go. Not only is buying second hand better for the environment, you will also be surprised with what you can find there.
