How To Buy Homeware On eBay

Interiors can be an expensive business, so it’s worth knowing eBay is an online treasure trove full of affordable pieces – even if the buying options and the breadth of choice can sometimes feel overwhelming. Here, we asked the eBay team to explain how to make the most of its homeware offering…

What brands can you expect to find on eBay?

“We have a vast range of furniture and homeware brands on eBay – including Swoon, MADE.com, Cox & Cox, Ercol, Rockett St George, Graham & Green, Sass & Belle and The White Company. But there are also plenty of vintage, independent and unique items to explore. It’s like a department store and antiques market, so it’s always worth carving out time to browse the unbranded pieces, too.”

What's the best way to search for homeware pieces on eBay?

“If you know what you want, the quickest way to search on eBay is by using our search bar at the top of the web page. Type in what you're looking for, hit ‘Search’, and we'll find the items that are the best match based on the search terms. You can also shop Daily Deals or Home & Garden for inspiration.”

What’s the best way to compare prices?

“Type in what you're looking for to the ‘Search’ bar, hit ‘Search’, and we'll find the items that best match your search. Select ‘Watch This Item’ beneath the buying options on the listing, then go to ‘My eBay’ and select ‘Watch List’ to compare the different items. This makes it easier to see everything in one place, listed one after the other.”

What are the different ways to bid on an item?

“There are two ways to bid and buy on eBay. With ‘Buy It Now’, you pay a fixed price and can purchase the item immediately, or you can ‘Bid’ on an item and try to win it for a lower price in an auction. On some bid listings you can also make an offer with the fixed price you want to pay.”

Who pays eBay fees – the buyer or seller?

"Only the seller pays any commission fees to eBay – all the buyer pays for is the item and postage (if postage isn’t free).”

What is the timeline for P&P?

“Postage timelines vary depending on the seller and item. You can always message a seller separately if you want to see if it’s possible to have something shipped to you more quickly.”

What guarantees do you have if the item isn't as described?

“The eBay Money Back Guarantee applies to most items on our site, and there's no extra fee for applying the coverage. It’s automatic and covers your purchase price, plus any original shipping costs on eligible purchases."

Is it possible to return an item?

“If the item you receive arrives damaged, doesn't match the listing description, or is just the wrong item, you're covered under the eBay Money Back Guarantee. In most circumstances you can return it even if the seller's returns policy says they don't accept returns. If you no longer want an item, you'll be able to see in the listing if the seller offers returns, how long you have to request a return, and any other terms and conditions.”
